The Unvoiced Expectation Trap

 Professional relationships often suffer not from stated disagreements but from expectations that one party holds and the other never knows exist. The unvoiced expectation trap occurs when professionals assume colleagues share their standards, timelines, or definitions of quality without ever articulating them. The trap snaps shut when the unstated expectation goes unmet, producing frustration that the other party cannot address because they never knew it existed. The trap is preventable through explicit communication at the outset of any collaboration. What does success look like? What timeline is assumed? What standard of quality is expected?
